Phi Phi or James Bond Island: which island trip to choose?
Turquoise lagoons or limestone cliffs? We compare the two most popular island trips from Phuket to help you choose.
5 min read

It is the question we hear most often in our shops in Patong and Bang Tao: “Phi Phi or James Bond Island?” Both are superb — but they are very different days.
Phi Phi: turquoise water and snorkeling
The Phi Phi islands are famous for their turquoise lagoons and beaches: Maya Bay (the beach of the film “The Beach”), Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and snorkeling stops over the reef. The trip is done by speedboat in open sea.
- Perfect for: beach lovers, snorkeling, couples and friends.
- Good to know: swimming is not allowed in Maya Bay itself (you visit the beach on foot), and the bay is usually closed for a few weeks each year (around August–September) to let nature recover.

James Bond Island: cliffs and sea canoe in Phang Nga Bay
In Phang Nga Bay, hundreds of limestone islands rise straight out of an emerald sea. You see the famous rock of James Bond Island, paddle by sea canoe through caves and hidden lagoons, and often stop at Koh Panyee, a village built on stilts.
- Perfect for: families, photographers, people who prefer a calmer sea.
- Good to know: the bay is sheltered, so this trip is a good choice during the rainy season (May–October).
Two ways to do it: by speedboat / long tail or on a big comfortable boat — ideal with children.
