The Similan Islands are the jewel of the Andaman Sea: granite boulders, powder-white sand and some of the clearest water in Thailand. They are a protected national park, which means the season is short — and planning matters.

When are the Similan Islands open?
The Mu Ko Similan National Park usually opens in mid-October and closes in mid-May, during the southwest monsoon, to protect the reefs and for safety at sea. Outside these dates, no trip to the Similans is possible.
- November to April: the best period — calm sea, sunshine and excellent visibility for snorkeling.
- October and May: the park is open but the weather is more changeable.
Tip: the number of daily visitors is limited by the park. In high season (December–March), book a few days in advance.
How does a day trip from Phuket work?
You are picked up at your hotel early in the morning and driven to the pier in the Khao Lak area (north of Phuket). From there, a speedboat takes you to the islands. The day usually includes several snorkeling stops, time on the beach, the famous viewpoint of Sail Rock (“Donald Duck Bay”) and lunch, before returning to your hotel in the evening.
