James Bond Island tour from Phuket: 2026 complete guide
James Bond Island tour from Phuket: speedboat vs big boat, sea canoe in the hongs, Koh Panyee, tides, park fee, what to bring and our local tips for 2026.

A James Bond Island tour is a full-day trip from Phuket into Phang Nga Bay, a sheltered sea dotted with limestone islands, where you see the famous Ko Tapu rock, paddle by sea canoe into caves and hidden lagoons, and usually stop at the Koh Panyee stilt village. It is one of the excursions our team in Patong and Bang Tao books most often, and one of the most reliable boat trips of the year because the bay is protected from the open sea. This guide answers the practical questions: which boat, how long, when to go, what it costs at the park and what to bring.
Hesitating between this trip and Phi Phi? Start with our comparison Phi Phi or James Bond Island: which one to choose? — the two days are very different.
What is James Bond Island exactly?
“James Bond Island” is the nickname of Khao Phing Kan, a small island in Ao Phang Nga National Park, and of the needle-shaped rock standing in the water next to it, Ko Tapu (“nail island”). Ko Tapu is about 20 metres high and stands roughly 40 metres off the shore of Khao Phing Kan. Both appeared in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, which made the place world-famous.
- Khao Phing Kan: you land here, walk along a short path and a small beach, and take the classic photo of Ko Tapu.
- Ko Tapu: you look at it, you do not touch it. Since 1998, boats have not been allowed to approach the rock closely, to limit erosion of its narrow limestone base. Nobody lands on Ko Tapu itself.
The island is small and almost every tour stops there, so expect company. The stop is usually short — enough for photos and a walk, not a beach day.
How far is Phang Nga Bay from Phuket and how long is the day?
Count on a full day of about 8 to 10 hours, hotel to hotel. The bay lies roughly 25 to 35 km north-east of Phuket. Tours leave from piers on Phuket’s east and north-east coast, which are about 45 minutes to 1 hour by road from Patong; from Bang Tao the drive is often a little shorter.
- Speedboat: about 45 minutes to reach the karst islands.
- Longtail: about 1 h 30, slower but closer to the water.
- Big boat: the slowest option, but the cruise through the islands is part of the experience, with seats, shade and toilets on board.
Most tours pick you up in the morning and drop you back in the late afternoon. Your exact pick-up time depends on your hotel zone and is confirmed by our team on WhatsApp after booking.
Speedboat, big boat or longtail: which should you choose?
Choose the speedboat if you want more stops and less time at sea, and the big boat if comfort and a relaxed pace matter more than speed. The longtail is the traditional wooden boat of the region: open, slower and noisier, but very photogenic.
| Speedboat | Big boat | Longtail | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to the islands | ≈ 45 min | Longest crossing | ≈ 1 h 30 |
| Comfort | Fast, some spray | Covered decks, toilets | Open boat, sun and noise |
| Number of stops | Usually the most | Fewer, longer stops | Varies |
| Group size | A few dozen guests | Large group | Small group |
| Best for | Couples, friends, active travellers | Families, seniors, sensitive backs | Photographers, a traditional feel |
Good news compared with Phi Phi: Phang Nga Bay is sheltered, so even the speedboat ride is usually much calmer than in the open sea. Speedboats are still not recommended for pregnant women, babies or people with back problems — for them, the big boat is the safer choice. If you also plan Phi Phi, our speedboat vs big boat guide for Phi Phi explains the same choice in open sea.

What does a typical James Bond Island tour include?
Most tours combine four elements, in an order that changes with the tide:
- Sea canoeing through caves and into a hong (hidden lagoon), with a paddler guiding your canoe.
- Khao Phing Kan and the view of Ko Tapu.
- Lunch at Koh Panyee, the floating village.
- Depending on the program, a swim or beach stop on another island, and sometimes extra viewpoints in the bay.
Hotel transfer, lunch, guide and canoeing are included on most tours, but programs differ — always check the exact details on the James Bond Island speedboat / longtail tour or James Bond Island big boat tour page before booking.
What is sea canoeing in the hongs like?
It is the highlight of the day for most of our clients. A hong (Thai for “room”) is a lagoon hidden inside a limestone island, open to the sky and reached through a low sea cave. Motorboats cannot enter, so you go in by canoe or inflatable kayak.
- On most tours a local guide paddles for you, so no experience or fitness is needed — you sit back and enjoy.
- Some cave ceilings are very low: you may have to lie back in the canoe for a few seconds.
- Inside, you will see mangroves, cliffs and sometimes monkeys or monitor lizards.
Children can usually join with an adult. Ask our team if you have a very young child or reduced mobility.
What is Koh Panyee floating village?
Koh Panyee (also written Ko Panyi) is a Muslim fishing village built on stilts against a limestone cliff in the middle of the bay. It was founded around 1880 by fishing families and is home to about 1,600 people today. It is famous for its floating football pitch, built by village children in the 1980s from wood and old rafts.
Most tours serve lunch here in a large seafood restaurant on stilts, then give you time to walk the narrow lanes, the market and the mosque area. Dress respectfully: cover your shoulders and avoid swimwear in the village.
When is the best time to visit: season, tides and time of day?
You can visit Phang Nga Bay all year, which is its big advantage over open-sea trips.
- Season: November to April brings the calmest, sunniest days; November to February is also the busiest period. From May to October the bay stays sheltered, so this trip is one of the best options when Phi Phi or the Similans are affected by the monsoon. See our guide to Phuket weather and boat trips.
- Tides: access to some caves and hongs depends on the tide — at high tide some entrances are too low, at low tide some are too shallow. This is why guides change the order of the stops from day to day. You do not need to plan it yourself.
- Time of day: Khao Phing Kan and Koh Panyee are busiest around late morning and lunchtime. Weekdays in the green season are the quietest.
Photo tip: the famous Ko Tapu shot looks best from the small beach on Khao Phing Kan, slightly to the side, with the rock against the open bay. Be patient for a few minutes and the crowd moves on.
How much is the Ao Phang Nga National Park fee?
At the time of writing (2026), the Ao Phang Nga National Park fee is 300 baht per foreign adult and 150 baht per foreign child; Thai nationals pay a lower rate. It is a government fee, separate from the tour price. Some tours include it and others collect it on the day, so check what is written on the excursion page. Koh Panyee itself is not run by the park, but it lies inside the park area.
What should you bring?
- Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
- A waterproof bag or phone pouch for the canoe.
- Sandals or water shoes that can get wet.
- A light shirt or sarong to cover shoulders in Koh Panyee.
- Cash in baht for the park fee if not included, drinks and souvenirs.
- Motion-sickness tablets if you are sensitive, even if the bay is usually calm.
Are the Hong Islands a good alternative?
Yes, if you want more swimming and beaches and less sightseeing. The Hong Islands lie on the Krabi side of Phang Nga Bay, roughly 30 km east of Phuket’s closest piers, between Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. They share the same limestone scenery, with an enclosed lagoon at Koh Hong, white sand and clear water, but no Ko Tapu and no floating village. In short: James Bond Island is the iconic sightseeing day, the Hong Islands are the beach-and-lagoon day. See the Hong Island Krabi tour for the program.
Is a James Bond Island tour worth it?
Yes, for most visitors — as long as you know what to expect. The landscape of hundreds of limestone towers rising from green water is unique, the canoeing is easy and memorable, and the sheltered bay makes it a safe bet in any season. It is less suited to travellers who mainly want to snorkel over coral: in that case, look at Phi Phi and Khai Islands or the other island tours. Families should also read Phuket with kids.

Frequently asked questions
Can you land on James Bond Island?
You can land on Khao Phing Kan, the island where tours stop, and walk to a small beach facing the famous rock. The rock itself, Ko Tapu, cannot be visited: since 1998 boats are not allowed to approach it closely, to protect it from erosion.
How long does a James Bond Island tour from Phuket take?
Plan a full day of about 8 to 10 hours from hotel pick-up to drop-off. The speedboat crossing to the islands takes about 45 minutes, a longtail about 1 hour 30, and a big boat longer.
Is a speedboat or a big boat better for James Bond Island?
A speedboat is faster and usually fits in more stops, while a big boat is more comfortable, with shade and toilets, and better for families, seniors and pregnant women. Phang Nga Bay is sheltered, so both are usually calm.
How much is the national park fee for James Bond Island?
At the time of writing (2026), the Ao Phang Nga National Park fee is 300 baht per foreign adult and 150 baht per foreign child. Check the excursion page to see whether it is included in your tour.
Can you go to James Bond Island in the rainy season?
Yes. Phang Nga Bay is sheltered from the open sea, so tours run all year and it is one of the most reliable boat trips from Phuket between May and October.
Do I need to know how to paddle for the sea canoe?
No. On most tours a local guide paddles the canoe for you through the caves and hongs, so no experience is needed.
What is the difference between James Bond Island and the Hong Islands?
James Bond Island tours focus on sightseeing in Phang Nga Bay: Ko Tapu, sea canoeing and Koh Panyee village. Hong Islands tours, on the Krabi side, focus more on beaches, swimming and an enclosed lagoon.
